Navigating the Realities of parenthood with Heather Mahon
Parenthood is often described as a blessing—but as Heather Mahon, therapist and mom, puts it, it’s also like a bomb going off in your life. In our latest podcast episode, Heather shared her unique insights on parenting, therapy, and the importance of accepting the messy, unfiltered realities of raising a child.
Parenting Isn’t Always Natural, and That’s Okay
Heather spoke about the societal narrative that parents—especially mothers—should love every second of parenting. In reality, there are parts of parenting that can feel unnatural, challenging, or even downright unenjoyable. “It’s not about being a bad parent,” she explained, “it’s about acknowledging the duality—loving your child while also holding space for the hard parts.”
Disruption Is Inevitable—Surrender to It
Becoming a parent means surrendering to massive change, Heather shared. Time, freedom, and autonomy all shift, and the sooner you accept that life will never be the same, the better equipped you’ll be to adapt. “It’s not something you can fully prepare for, but knowing that change is inevitable makes it easier to navigate.”
Parenting as a Mirror for Growth
Heather discussed how parenting often brings up unresolved issues from our own childhoods, creating opportunities for reflection and growth. “How we were parented informs how we parent. For some, that means breaking cycles or healing through the process of providing the love and support they didn’t receive.”
The Importance of Community
“We weren’t meant to parent alone,” Heather emphasized. Whether it’s leaning on friends, family, or even professional help, building a supportive community is essential for surviving—and thriving—through the chaos of parenting.
Takeaway:
Parenting is messy, beautiful, and full of contradictions. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, to admit when you’re struggling, and to seek help when you need it. As Heather reminded us, “You’re not doing it wrong—you’re just doing it, and that’s enough.”
